Traditional Dances Now More Favoured
Beatnik-type dances at Tamworth’s Assembly Rooms are out and more traditional dances our coming in, members of Tamworth Borough Council were told at their meeting.

Councillor H. Titterton reported that block bookings had been made by a reputable firm whose aim was to upgrade the standard of dances and improve the tone of the place.

Alderman Tom Kennedy said that an end to rowdyism and to the bad odour which had surrounded dances at the Assembly Rooms of the past few years would be welcomed on all sides.

Councillor Mrs Lily Tricklebank was less optimistic. She said she could see little or no difference between the groups which had been playing at dances over the past few years and the groups recently advertised.

She criticised the decision to allow the firm making the block bookings to have a guaranteed Christmas holiday dance. Quite a number of charitable organisations have been running dances at a loss and had hoped to recuperate something on the certain profit-making Christmas Dances but had to take a chance of their names being drawn out of the hat, she said. But her move to persuade the council to allocate all the Christmas Week dance evenings by a ballot failed to find support.

Discotheque Opened At Mile Oak18/11/66 - Tamworth Herald
Discotheque Opened At Mile Oak
A new Discotheque in the Mile Oak Hotel opened on Friday night complete with the "new stereo big-sound" and with the appearance of an exclusive nightclub.

The Discotheque with its adjoining bar, has on its walls a "New York at night" scene painted with blue, white, yellow and green fluorescent paints. This absorbs the ultra-violet light from eleven tubes hanging from the ceiling, giving the decor extra fascination; the effect has to be seen to be believed.

At the far end of the room, behind the jukebox which contains 100 singles and, 60 LPs and 120 EPs covering a range of musical tastes including the latest "pop" and Italian music, is a backcloth of coloured lights which when a disc is played flash in time with the music, these are known as a "chromatic".

The idea of a Discotheque originated in Paris and then spread to America. Mr A. Levy, local representative of the Headingley Company in Yorkshire told the "Herald" that it was his company that brought the Discotheque to Britain and described Discotheques as "having an on beat sound in a off beat setting."

Mr Levy, continued: "the general standard of entertainment for young people in public houses is very low with. We hope with Messrs. Bass, Mitchell and Buttlers, to select the best public houses in the Greater Midlands area and open up our Discotheques there.

The new Discotheques will be in a radius of a few miles of each other so young people will be able to visit a large number of them, which will all have different decor, but possess the new big sound and chromatic lighting which we have specially developed to meet the requirements of the Discotheque.

No Dances At Assembly Rooms Over Christmas Period
There will be no dances at the Corporation-owned Assembly Rooms in Tamworth during the Christmas period.

No applications to stage dances on Christmas Eve, Boxing Night or New Year's Eve have been received by the Borough Council.

A council spokesman said: "Dances on these nights have had to be allocated by ballot for many years. A Christmas without dances cannot be recalled."

Only weeks ago it was announced a move by an entertainments firm to improve the standard of dances at the Assembly Rooms had "flopped".

Three Star Entertainment Ltd, based at Stourbridge, cancelled the remainder of the six-month block booking of the Rooms on Friday and Saturday nights after the first four dances did not get the support expected.

When a block booking was accepted by the Council, the firm was given a guarantee it could present a dance on one of the three nights at Christmas or New Year. This was withdrawn when their main booking was cancelled.

Councillor Howard Titterton, Chairman of the Estates, Parks and Allotments Committee which is responsible for the Assembly Rooms, said: "It is a great pity no organisation has applied to hold dance on any of the three nights. we are very sorry.

"There is not enough time left now for anyone to arrange a dance for any of these nights.

"It seems the Assembly Rooms have lost their attraction as a dance venue."

Councillor Titterton said the committee was also disappointed by the response Three Star Entertainments received for its dances.

"The company was trying to lift the dances out of the rut of rather mediocre groups and wanted to get back to a more traditional type dance." he said.
